Luminous, vibrating or energy-generating smart textiles are a market worth billions
The development of intelligent textiles, so-called smart textiles, is providing not only industry, but also the trade, with a huge additional growth market. The assumption is that control and sensor elements, as well as localisation and navigation modules, will be incorporated as standard into work, sports and everyday wear in Germany from 2020 onwards. The topic of energy generation by means of textiles will in future play a more dominant role as a technology. Clothing with a nanoparticle coating can not only conduct electricity but also generate it through the movement of the textile fibres. The advantage: mobile phones, MP3 players etc. can be charged directly in this way. According to experts, however, the greatest market potential for smart textiles with the promise of sales in the region of billions is health and fitness, mainly due to the demographic change in society.
