Designers & Fashion: Texworld is preparing for the sector’s

TexworldTexworld will be continuing with its “Designers & Fashion” project next September and expanding it with participation by a specialist jury from the world of fashion in order to choose the best candidate portfolios.
Since last year the organisers at Texworld have offered a space at the show without charge that is dedicated to young graduates of fashion design schools. It is a fruitful initiative both for these young textile stylists and designers, who can present their collections, showcase their work and make contacts with exhibitors and visitors alike, and also for the latter two groups of players at Texworld who can discover and link up with young talent in this way.

TexworldTexworld, which identifies itself as an exhibition for business, is above all a special meeting place for professionals from the textiles and clothing sector, in particular on account of its international acceptance (87% international visitors, exhibitors from the whole world over).
Apart from the interest in discovering new suppliers or new clients, and especially in finding superb quality products at the best prices on the market, Texworld is an effective platform for meetings in person among professionals.
By offering designers just starting out on their careers a free opportunity to present their collections and by opening its doors wide to international fashion design schools - Michael Scherpe, president of Messe Frankfurt France, insists on welcoming groups of students who visit the show in person - Texworld provides a major service to all the players involved, whether they are exhibitors or buyers, and by preparing for the future of the sector.

A significant service for everyone
As far as exhibitors are concerned it is a considerable service, as, frequently having come from the other side of the world, with ultra modern factories, a skilled and efficient workforce and above all with a substantial potential market, they have a need for young, talented people to assist them in interpreting the requirements of the western market, to adapt their collections and in order to develop their own staff. They are also frequently looking to improve their performance on domestic markets, and the expertise of European designers can provide them with assistance in this.

As to the visitors, it is similarly a means of discovering new talent and establishing contact with young people who represent the future of their profession, and surveys conducted at the show in this regard attest to their interest.

The various graduates or junior entrepreneurs who took part in the first projects for “Designers & Fashion” all have excellent memories of it and many cannot wait to submit their application again in order to return to Texworld.
As it is, they have received very diverse offers of help, collaboration and work placements, which may range from designing a special collection to proposals as agents in their own country and including some most original ways of helping out, like that suggested to Marie-Laure Marquet, who is going to present her designs during a show at an exhibition dedicated to organic textiles in India next October. (see other reports overleaf)
It is also a way of broadening their horizons since some of them have found agents to represent them in faraway countries like Japan and to help them establish themselves in these markets.

Applications should be submitted before 1st June 2009.
As far as the practical details are concerned, any young stylist, designer or pattern designer who has a strong collection and intends to develop their career on an international scale can send their application (CV + portfolio + any articles that will demonstrate the designer’s work) to Texworld (1 avenue de Flandre, Paris 75019, for the attention of François Decaux – or by email: francois.decaux@france.messefrankfurt.com).
Any type of creative ideas for textiles-clothing accepted: men’s, women’s or children’s fashion, fashion accessories, lingerie/swimwear, collections of fabrics for clothing...
The jury consists of three professionals, a senior designer from the style agency Nelly Rodi, Christine Walter Bonini, director of Esmod and Julie Mangaud, journalist at Fashion Mag, will meet during the month of June to select the 10 designers who will be exhibiting at Texworld.
This selection will make up the next crop of “Designers & Fashion”, set to be discovered during the next session of Texworld from Monday, 14 to Thursday, 17 September 2009 at the Paris le Bourget Exhibition Centre.

Young graduates report:
“We really enjoyed taking part at Texworld in Paris where we were able to make quite a lot of contacts both with exhibitors and with buyers who were glad to talk to us,” reports Alexandre Pogosyan, a graduate of Hanover University of Applied Arts. In four days we had the opportunity to work very seriously side-by-side with the world of professionals.”

Ranges for the Audi sport collection
“This is how four of us contributed to development of the new collections for Audi S Line. This brand is developing three sports ranges for men, women and children...After a brief meeting where colours, target markets and feasibility dates were established, we designed eight tops for the three ranges, inspired by the new AUDI. In each collection the car has been considered with its particular characteristics: three-dimensionality, aerodynamics and elegance.
This is how, for both men and women, we designed three-dimensional printing and other details evoking the car’s lines, whereas the children’s collection was more playful.”

School uniforms
“I had lots of opportunities taking part at Texworld,” reports Anja Boning. “I met some very interesting people there, in particular one of the designers and his boss at “World Textiles”, a major German company. I first produced a few pieces for a collection as a freelancer, for Jägermeister and for Hockenheim Ring, two of their brands. Then I had the opportunity to work on my collection for my degree with their help and for them. At the moment I am still working for them and I have just designed a collection for school uniforms that they would like to promote in the near future.”

The next Texworld show which will present the trends for autumn/winter 2010/2011 will be held at the Paris le Bourget exhibition centre from Monday, the 14th to Thursday, the 17th September 2009.
