« Véronique »
Jean Gabriel Domergue (Bordeaux 1889 - 1962)

Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Dimensions: H 32 x W 26 inches With frame: H 41 x W 30 inches.

Our painting represents Véronique who, certain of her charm and beauty, seduces the spectator.

Her hair adds to this game of seduction ; it frames her face and falls upon her shoulders in long curls the warm color of amber. Subtle hints of light give a striking relief to this mane of hair that seems to be in movement.

Thanks to the technique of transparencies and contrasts that Domergue uses marvelously, the woman’s figure emerges from the blue background and gives her infinite softness. Suppressing any vulgarity, Domergue uses a specific movement; Veronique’s body balances on the side, a movement accentuated by her hand and the thin strap falling from her shoulder. With his remarkable sense of color and with his rapid brushstrokes, the artist is able to give sensuality to this woman. « Jean Gabriel Domergue l’art et la mode », by Gérard Louis Soyer, éditions Sous le Vent/Vilo, Paris.Previously in the collection of the model’s family.

PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach | America's International Fine Art & Antique Fair, the nation’s premier destination for fine art and antiques, will be held on February 3 – 11, 2007. The Palm Beach Fair has introduced revised vetting guidelines, enriched and expanded educational programs, special exhibitions, and a new VIP Private Collector Preview this year.

Exhibitor: Iliad Antik
A set of six Biedermeier side chairs
The Fair features vetted works of art from 100 of the world's leading dealers, representing all disciplines of art from classical antiquity to the present, including Greek, Roman and Egyptian; Asian art; Old Master paintings and sculpture; arms and armor; American and European 19th and early 20th century fine art and antiques; 18th - 20th century furniture; jewelry and objects d'art; pre-Columbian and tribal art; classic modern and art by contemporary masters.

Dr. Michael P. Mezzatesta is the director of the Palm Beach Fair. He joined the company in 2006 after serving as curator of European Art at the Kimbell Art Museum in Ft. Worth, Texas and as director of the Duke University Museum of Art from 1987 to 2003.

Vernissage and The Mosaic Fund

The Palm Beach Fair will commence on the evening of February 1, 2007 with the elegant Vernissage, the exclusive opening night and private preview. A highlight of the Palm Beach social season, the Vernissage is attended by leading art dealers, collectors, interior designers, philanthropists, museum professionals and art experts. This year’s gala chair is Audrey Gruss; co-chairs are Alyne Massey, Lee Munder and Hilary and Wilbur Ross; international honorary chairs will be Viscount and Viscountess Rothermere; honorary chairs are Chris and Grace Meigher; Pauline Pitt and Tom Quick; and junior committee chair is Talbott Maxey. The Midwest regional co-chair is Catharine Hamilton; the Southwest regional co-chair will be Joan Schnitzer Levy; and the west coast regional co-chairs are Lauren King, Ann Johnson and Trevor Traina.

The Vernissage format includes cocktails and hors d’oeuvres followed by a private dinner at Club Colette. The Vernissage benefits the Mosaic Fund, a philanthropic endowment dedicated to supporting non-profit programs in the arts and arts education throughout Palm Beach and Martin counties. The fund is managed by the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties (CFPBMC) and last year it raised over $208,000. The Community Foundation made the first Mosaic Fund grant of $25,000 to the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach. The project, now underway, funds a program for at risk children to design and construct an outdoor mosaic along the front of Howard Park, adjacent to the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Three more grants of $25,000 each will be announced this year for projects supporting the arts and art education in the community.

Special Exhibitions

A special exhibition on Marie Antoinette and art from her reign will be a highlight of the Palm Beach Fair. The focus of the exhibition will be the splendid state portrait of Marie Antoinette by Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun. The painting, on loan from the New Orleans Museum of Art, is over 10 feet high and considered to be the artist’s masterpiece and one of the finest 18th century royal portraits in existence. In addition to Vigée Le Brun’s portrait of the Queen, the exhibition also will feature a selection of sculpture and decorative arts from the same period.

The director general of the Musée de Versailles, Pierre Arizzoli-Clementel will give a lecture on Marie Antoinette and the arts during the opening weekend of the fair. Interestingly, Versailles houses a second version of the Marie Antoinette portrait by the same artist. Also on loan from Versailles will be a collection of dramatic, large-scale color photographs offering spectacular images of the chateau and fascinating accounts of restoration projects now underway. A small, focused exhibition of French 18th century ceramics from the private holdings of California collector MaryLou Boone will compliment the French theme. There also will be a special exhibition entitled, “The Faces of Russia” featuring 16 outstanding paintings and drawings of the 1880’s to the 1930”s from the collection of Dr. and Mrs. Boris Stavrovski, New York.

Educational Programming

Dr. Mezzatesta has introduced a new grant program this year called the Palm Beach Fair Museum Publication Grant Program. It is intended to support the vital contribution museums scholarly research provides to the cultural and intellectual life of their communities. Three grants were awarded this fall to the Acland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina; the Houston Museum of Fine Art, and the Sterling and Francine Clark Art. Institute, Williamstown, Massachusetts. “Applications were submitted from museums across the country, all of which were worthy of support, and we look forward to continuing this program next year,” he said. Another educational program at the Palm Beach Fair will feature a full series of special lectures on both weekends. A new program of In-Booth Seminars given by participating exhibitors on their specialties will offer visitors the opportunity to learn about art of special interest to them and to study objects first- hand.

Vetting Guidelines

The revised vetting guidelines now permit work produced by artists born before January 1, 1977 to be eligible for inclusion. Previously, no art made after 1970 was permitted. This approach allows art created recently by established artists to be considered for admission and emphasizes the vital connection between art of the past and of the present while maintaining a generation’s separation between palmbeach3 and the Palm Beach Fair. Classic modern and contemporary art are strong components of any fine art and antique fair. With these new vetting guidelines, the presence of both at the Palm Beach Fair will increase.
