Sarajevo Fashion Week
May 4-11, 2009

The second night of „Jana Fashion Week“ is tradicionally the night of the bosnian and herzegovinian designers. Nizara Mehmedovic, Belma Tvico, Alen Kekic presented their actual collections, Slavica Aleksijev presented the collection „Midnight Star“ dedicated her mother. The fashion brand „AR“ created by many designers from the region was also presented last night. The joint creation of one fashion brand is indeed the very idea of the European Festival of Design.

The upcoming European Festival of Design, which will be held from May 4 until May 11, 2009 in the Bosnian Cultural Center is the culmination of ten years of hard-work, dedication and desire.
The European Festival of Design is a fashion event known to all relevant factors on the world fashion scene. This Festival came into being thanks to the inexhaustible energy, vision, and knowledge possessed by Ms. Amela Radan, Festival Director and surely one of the leading names in Southeastern Europe.

It was in fact due to her desire and guiding vision to restore the reputation of the Bosnian textile industry to the high position which it had in this region in the years before the war, that talented designers became involved with the European Festival of Design. These creative designers seek to promote their creations in cooperation with fashion houses from Bosnia and Herzegovina which produce collections for export.

Through the presentation of fashion, culture, tradition, and the natural wealth of Bosnia and Herzegovina we successfully brought about this project that has great importance in the field of tourism as well as education. Cooperation has also been established with the French Fashion School “Moda Art Esmond.” This project also linked many European associations in the fields of tourism, culture, education, and economics.

That globalization has particularly affected countries in transition is a serious problem which must be faced, however with knowledge, hard work, talent, and perseverance success is guaranteed.

In the same manner as the first Festival, this year’s Festival will also gather young talented designers in the workshop for youth in the Bosnian Cultural Center and the Textile School from May 4 through May 6. There will also be a product design exhibition – Handicrafts and Urban Design.

The Opening of the European Festival on May 7, 2009 showcases young and established designers from BiH, the region, an Europe with the theme--Costumography in design, fashionable, historical and experimental costume. The School of Applied Arts Sarajevo, The Textile High School Sarajevo, The Academy of Fine Arts Sarajevo, The High Textile School for Design, Technology and Management Belgrade (Transformation of forms of Spanish Renaissance costumes), The Academy of Applied Arts Belgrade (Experimental Costume) and The High School of Design Ljubljana will also participate in this presentation.

On Friday, May 8 is traditionally the night of BiH designers at which the creations of Sanja Džeba, Nizara Mehmedovic, Slavica Aleksijev, Alen K and Belma Tvico will be presented.

Saturday, May 9 belongs to designers from the region – Southeast European Fashion Fusion: Jovan Petrovski and Danijela Simonovska will represent Macedonia, Maja Marukic-Serbia and Silvana Nini and Enada Zeqo-Albania.

On Sunday May 10, the youngest models will open the evening by presenting Irena Grahovac's extraordinary Pret-a Porte collection, inspired by the styles of the 1940s. Then BiH designer Nermina Begovic with her collection of jewelry, established Adnan Hajrulahovic Haad, and Brand AR in whose preparation and presentation all designers from the region took part. This embodies the guiding principal of the entire European Festival of Design, which is cooperation and teamwork.

The last night of the European Festival of Design closes with a fashion show by a great friend of the Festival and famous designer from Holland, Addy van den Krommenacker, who created a special dress for this Festival, which demonstrates support for the festival and its Director Ms. Amela Radan. Visitors to the Bosnian Cultural Center will also see a fashion show by Italian Fashion House--GLAMOUR.
The grand finale belongs to Admir Karišik with the theme “Dance Costume.”

Over the course of ten years many designers have presented their collections to the Sarajevo public. These include many established names from the fashion world such as Percy Irasquin, Alviero Martini, Frans Molenaar, Barbara Ruegg, Kristian Aadnevik, Marianne Hadorn, Christophe Josse, Lilian Aulie Schjoll, Reinaldo Alvarez, Eymeric Francoise, Irakli Nasidze, Tilmann Grawe, Katherine Pradeau, Sakina M’sa Karin Bonnet, Silla Real, Simone Mauz, Izabel Ardevol, Lars-Frederic Hild, Kais Hadd, Agathe Ruiz de la Prada, Addy Van Den Krommenacker), as well as many other world designers. At the same time this Festival is a springboard for many BiH designers as well as those from the region to be invited to present their creations every year in every corner of the world (Europe, Africa, Asia, America..).
It can be said that thanks to the European Festival of Design – SFW, the city of Sarajevo is marked in capital letters on the world fashion map, as a significant destination.
