Creative Month of Indonesia


Jakarta, 20 Aug 2008 - The fashion event that trumps all fashion events arrives in the form of Festival Mode Indonesia - Jakarta Fashion Week 2008. In conjunction with the Tourism Office of Jakarta and sponsored by Sunsilk, the event is a collaborative contribution in support of the development of the nation’s creative industry.

Mirta Kartohadiprodjo, CEO Femina Group, this event is Femina Group’s contribution to the development of the nation’s creative industry with the support and collaboration of the Tourism Office of Jakarta. “In many countries, the creative industry, including that of fashion, has proven to be one of the financial movers and shakers for a community. The flexible nature of the industry easily adapts to a variety of market situations, making it a powerful economic stronghold.”

Mirta’s statement is in line with the data released by the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia concerning the Gross Domestic Product between 2002 – 2006 above (using constant price of year 2000), which shows that the contribution of the creative industry towards the price of the national GDP reached 4.74% or Rp 79.08 trillion.

This is a fairly large sum. The fact is the largest contribution came from the fashion industry in the sum of Rp 23.608 trillion (28,76%), followed by the handicraft sector with Rp 17.952 trillion (22.11%) and advertising with Rp 14.532 trillion (19.11%).

Seeing the growth potential of the fashion industry, the aim of Femina Group is for Festival Mode Indonesia – Jakarta Fashion Week 2008 to be a historic moment in Indonesian fashion history because this event is not only a challenge and a competition within the local market but also an introduction of Indonesian fashion into the region. The crème of the crop from the Indonesian Fashion Designers Association (APPMI) and Indonesian Fashion Designer Council (IPMI) will be displaying an array of styles ranging from Moslem and evening wear to ethnic and contemporary alongside independent and young designers and those from Australia.

Four days of the finest of Indonesian luxury and couture fashion and accessories will be aired under a massive open-air tent spanning 500 m2 where a projected 5000 visitors will be watching the display of 47 designers and covered by an amalgamation of national and international press to ensure worldwide exposure.

“It is fitting that IPMI welcomes with pleasure the Festival Mode Indonesia – Jakarta Fashion Week 2008 because all forms of activity in support of the fashion industry in an encouragement in IPMI’s effort to introduce the creativity of this nation and to convey to the national as well as international communities about the growth of Indonesian style itself,” said Dipl. Des. Sjamsidar Isa, President of IPMI.

Head of APPMI, Taruna K Kusmayadi agreed whole-heartedly stating, “the creativity and talent of local designers must be placed in the limelight for the whole world to see, so this can motivate them in their interactions with international trade and the world becomes aware that Indonesia is a treasury filled with creative individuals in the fashion world”.

Festival Mode Indonesia and Jakarta Fashion Week will be taking place from 20th – 24th August at Pacific Place Mall. Attendees are expected to reach the thousands, ranging from fashionistas, socialites, foreign press as well as the general public to view more than 600 new designs from 47 creators (24 APPMI designers, 18 from IPMI, one independent and four Australians). The lavish mall in south Jakarta will be the venue for Jakarta Fashion Week. The collections will be shown in an airy alfresco Fashion Tent specially constructed by the Femina Group and Pacific Place, complete with a full-blown stage, state-of-the-art lighting and multimedia.

With the ongoing preparations, Festival Mode Indonesia – Jakarta Fashion Week 2008 is included in the Creative Month of Indonesia held by the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia.
