Dubai Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2009

Dubai, UAE, 10 March, 2009 — Dubai Fashion Week (DFW) has revealed its line-up for the Autumn/Winter 2009 (AW09) season from April 5 – 9, 2009 at the Godolphin Ballroom, Jumeirah Emirates Towers.

The show promises to be an unmissable experience for fashion-lovers across the region with an eclectic mix of 28 designers exclusively showcasing their new collections. Alongside some of the region’s more established designers such as BodyAMR and HSY, renowned for their limited-editions and couture respectively, the week will also showcase the winners of DFW’s Emerging Talent Competition, giving those lucky enough to attend, an exclusive sneak preview at wardrobe must haves and trends for AW09.

Rohit C Sabikhi, Director of Fashion, Concept Events said, "Our line-up is testimony to the talent and commercial success of the industry here. An increasing number of designers, buyers and media are registered from across the entire region, to witness the new seasonal collections."

Designer Biographies

Ajaz Rahim- KashMIRI: In 2004, a chance trip to Dubai changed his path forever. Taking part in the Index Fair, he sensed the retail opportunity in Dubai was good and set up his first retail venture, Miri (a high-end, luxurious home/ lifestyle brand) at Souk Madinat, Jumeirah. Following its huge success, he shortly opened a Miri at the Mall of the Emirates.

Aly Fawaz: Is a leading Middle Eastern designer from Abu Dhabi whose collections are primarily couture.

Amal Murad - Redaa: Amal’s styles of abayas are unique, bringing together the traditional with modern touches that are up-to-date with the global fashion era which most women in the Gulf Region typically enjoy. Each collection differs significantly as Amal experiments with styles and trimmings.

Amber Feroz: His spark was visible at DFW last year earning him a niche with the chicest celebrities as well as critical acclaim from the regional fashion media. Amber's signature aims to strike a balance between commercial viability and creative futurism.

Amir Adnan: The Amir Adnan brand label began in 1990 as a collection of unique couture ties, hand-made by a creative and visionary banker. The label quickly grew to become a pioneer in rendering traditional menswear, specifically the sherwani, into a signature high-fashion luxury item coveted by the urbane Pakistani male.

Amit GT: In January 2003, he launched his own prêt label called 'Senses by Amit GT' which was a runaway success. Recently, he rechristened the label as 'Amit GT' which is an umbrella for his prêt, diffusion and couture lines. While he has been designing menswear ever since his label’s inception, he only forayed into women's wear in 2005 when he launched a collection at Asia Fashion Week in Singapore.

Amr Ali -BodyAMR
: Pronounced ‘Body Amour’, the brand twists the empowerment of a woman with the designer’s name ‘Amr’, and came from an inspired Annie Lennox late one night in London.

Amr’s near obsession with the female form reflects in the mood of the brand and now attracts a dedicated cult-like band of women representing the world’s fashion elite who loyally follow his progress, hunting down the limited-edition pieces from some of the most fashion-forward boutiques on each continent.

Charu Parashar: Charu is motivated by taking the ‘exotic’ and ancient printing techniques to the highest levels of luxury. Self-styled ambassador of “Indian Fashion” and “Revivalist”, Charu’s distinctive signature uses the finest of textile-print and combines it with the rich detailing derived from centuries of Indian craftsmanship techniques.

Chitra Amarnani Is a leading designer in the region who specialises in abayas. Chitra began her career with designing Indian salwar kameezes and sarees which she marketed locally as well as in the Far East. What began as a passion heralded an entrepreneurial initiative for Chitra when local friends encouraged her to try her hand at designing abayas and shailas.

Deborah Simcox: Would most often be found hunched over a sewing machine, trying to frantically sew outfits and hats for friends to compliment their busy social lives. It was in 1996 that she took her first steps into formalising her career and completed a ‘City and Guilds’ qualification in dressmaking. She is one of the winners of DFW’s Emerging Talent Competition for 2009.

Ekta Singh: Launched her own label in 2001 with her forte being bridal wear. Her meticulous attention to detailing garments and her choice of fabrics and embellishments are sure to be a crowd pleaser this season.

Hassan Sheheryar Yasin: The fashion house HSY, was traditionally known for its couture, specialising in bridal wear. However, it now offers eight different lines including HSY Bridal, HSY Couture, HSY Private Collection, HSY R2W Deluxe, HSY R2W, HSY Basics, HSY Resort and HSY Noir. Hassan Sheheryar is the recipient of many national and international awards including the Lux Style Best Designer Award which he won in both 2005 and 2007. In November last year, he won the MTV award for Style Icon of 2008. Last month he was selected as one of the ‘AHLAN! HOT 100 Style Icons’ for 2009.

Homa Qamar: The young and talented Homa is a Dubai based fashion designer. For her, designing is more then a passion. She regards it as a living form of art and imagination. Her design approach is deeply rooted in blending different mediums of art, cultures and fabrics with modern tailoring, embellishments and cuts. She is one of the winners of DFW’s Emerging Talent Competition for 2009.

Jai Singh and Parvesh Kumar- Parvesh Jai: Coming from small towns in India, Parvesh and Jai graduated from The National Institute of Fashion Technology (Mohali) in 2002, being awarded the “Most Creative” and “Viewers Choice” awards. The label, Parvesh Jai made its mark in Vogue and both designers grew their expertise by collaborating with the major swimwear companies of Greece like Crool, Bluepoint, Mini’s and Elvis. In 2007, they also participated in more renowned fairs like Fatex (Paris) and Motexha (Dubai) while they designed for international labels like Von Dutch, Parah and many others.

Ladan Yadollahvand: Is a native of Iran but was raised in Germany and graduated from Business Studies. Her great love of fashion made her realise that she needed a "career change”. Ladan Yadollahvand moved to Hamburg to pursue a career in fashion design and to gain additional experience in organising fashion shows. She recently moved to Dubai where she is combining her business skills with her visionary sense of style in this first collection. She is a winner of DFW’s Emerging Talent Competition for 2009.

Manish Malhotra: Is one of the most popular designers in the Indian fashion and film industries. The film characters dressed by Manish have been described as powerful enough to express themselves through their clothes without uttering a single word. In his short tenure in Bollywood, he has designed the costumes for countless celebrities.

Mariam Al Mazro: One and a half years ago Mariam launched Mimi’s Fashion Designs at the Sharjah Bride Show. Now, she is looking forward to this “dream come true” and the opportunity it offers her to establish Mimi’s Fashion Designs as an international brand.

Meera Mahadevia: Is highly influenced by Ghandian values and inspired by nature and a unique blend of mediums. She has exhibited in Singapore, Dubai and London (with Indian Merchant Chambers as her platform). Meera has created ripples in the accessory world with her stunning range of handcrafted bags, belts, shoes and contemporary jewellery.

Najibah Pandor: Najibah’s work is described as being “not just a fashion label but a choice of lifestyle, based around comfort, luxury and glamour”. Najibah aims to ignite true feminism and to make women “feel alive”. She is one of the winners of DFW’s Emerging Talent Competition for 2009.

Nausheen Akhter: Nausheen says her designs are “based on a passion to be unique”. In March2008, she launched her label Nausheen at ROXX fashion outlet in Ajman. She is one of the winners of DFW’s Emerging Talent Competition for 2009.

Noelle Adam: After working as a Barrister in Criminal Law and Family Law in the Netherlands for more than 10 years, Noelle decided to move into fashion. She completed a ‘Diploma in Fashion Design’ in the UK and is launching her first collection at DFW this season after being named one of the winners of DFW’s Emerging Talent Competition for 2009.

Pria Puri: This label represents the multi-cultural and multifaceted lifestyle of women today, who use style as tools to enhance and express their beauty and personality. Pria describes the collection as having “no complicated shapes, no frills or a lot of fuss, simply elegant yet luxurious clothing”. She believes that elegance does not mean being noticed; it means being remembered.

Raakhee Raipanchola: Raakhee studied fashion at the American University in London. She has designed several collections under this label so far and derives inspiration from various abstract sources, art, architecture and cultures and interprets these into contemporary, unique and marketable designs.

Rajeev Nihalani - Royal Rickshaw: Based in Dubai, Royal Rickshaw was founded by Rajiv in 2006. The collection is essentially ‘bling’ by nature with Swarovski detailing and immaculate craftsmanship, catering to the quintessential fashion follower. As the Creative Director, he heads a team of designers and workers to develop this label which, in its 5th season, is stocked by over a dozen leading stores around the GCC.

Reem and Hind Ali Beljafla - DAS collection: DAS collection is designed by Emirati sisters Reem and Hind. Reem, who trained as a designer in London, was recently awarded ‘Best Business Woman of the Year’ and ‘Best Design Business’ at the Mohammed bin Rashid Awards for Young Business Leaders. She is the owner-operator of REE International, a communications and design agency. Hind, the younger of the two, is following in her sister’s footsteps in becoming a nationally recognised businesswoman in her own right. Her busy schedule is also split between her hobbies and charity work.

Salma Khan - Salma Khan Fashion House: Is a charming designer who made a name for herself in the Dubai high-fashion industry with her exquisite collection of wedding and evening gowns. From light party wear to elegant bridal and formal wear, she understands the tastes of people in Dubai who come from different walks of life.

Walid Atallah: The international designer “Walid Atallah” was born in the city of Beirut in Lebanon. After finishing high school there, he continued his study in fashion design and graduated from the University of Chicago. Walid’s ingenuity in design is clear in the way he mixes the charm of the East with the infancy of the West.
