Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week 2009 will Celebrate Fifty Editions
CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK, the grand forum for Spanish design, will stage its fiftieth edition between 18th and 22nd September 2009 at Feria de Madrid This leading showcase for fashion design in Spain will stage a special edition in order to mark this important anniversary. It will also bring together a number of interesting new features, thus confirming once again its role as the leading promotional forum for Spanish fashion and the industry's most outstanding point of reference.
Over the last twenty-five years, CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK, an event organised by IFEMA, has worked ceaselessly to launch and promote the most outstanding designers of the day, thus helping to boost the profile and unity of Spanish fashion as a whole, resulting in the excellent image that it enjoys today. This work has been made possible by the considerable support that Madrid's institutions have provided for the Fashion Show, especially the initiatives undertaken by the Madrid Regional Government.
The fiftieth edition of CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK will present a solid and comprehensive programme of fashion parades, based on the participation of a total of 56 designers. To these we must add another thirty-five designers, who will present their collections in the EL EGO Showroom, an area that will feature direct sale to members of the public throughout the five-day duration of CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK.
Among the new features at this edition of CIBELES, which will encompass 49 fashion parades, we might highlight the return of two grand names from the world of Spanish fashion to this prestigious forum: Adolfo Domínguez and Roberto Verino. Domínguez, one of the habitual participants at CIBELES in the 1980's and early 1990's, has decided to return to the catwalks and has chosen Madrid as the venue for his comeback, following an absence of ten years. For his part, Roberto Verino will return to CIBELES, joining in the celebrations designed to mark the event's twenty-five years at the service of the industry. Verino first took part at CIBELES at its second edition, which took place back in September 1985.
Furthermore, on Monday 21st September at 6.00 p.m., the Fashion Show will host the staging of the Elio Berhanyer fashion parade. On this occasion, CIBELES aims to stage a special event in order to acknowledge the importance of the designer's career, offering a homage packed with symbolism for one of the great masters of Spanish fashion, a figure who celebrated his eightieth birthday this year. In this respect, during the Berhanyer fashion parade, the fiftieth edition of CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK will bring together some of the most outstanding Spanish models who have taken part at the Fashion Show over the years. Helena Barquilla, Nieves Álvarez, Judith Mascó, Esmeralda Martín, Tammy, Mónica Boada, Irene Jiménez de la Iglesia and Natalia López have already confirmed their participation at this homage event.
CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK in New York
CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK will once again open the fashion parade programme in New York. At this edition, the number of Spanish designers presenting their creations in the Big Apple will increase. Thus, Davidelfín will once again present his collection in the US city, whilst the designers Juanjo Oliva, Ana Locking, Duyos and Carmen March will take part in a virtual presentation. These initiatives will coincide with the staging of New York Fashion Week. Both of these presentations within the framework of one of the most important fashion weeks in the world have a special significance for Spain's leading fashion show, given that they mark the leap that five Spanish designers have recently made to the international fashion scene (a step that Davidelfín first undertook last February), whilst also signifying a further development regarding the internationalisation of CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK, in this case on the American Continent.
The four designers (Juanjo Oliva, Ana Locking, Duyos and Carmen March) who will be presenting their creations in the Big Apple for the first time, all form part of the 4EYES Project, going beyond pre-established canons and formal media. Through the creation of a virtual fashion parade/installation, which will be shown at New York Public Library, these designers will create a new vision of fashion, based on a presentation of their collections.
In this respect, CIBELES has worked alongside the Association of Fashion Creators of Spain (ACME) on various initiatives that have been organised for this group in New York, such as the exhibition that was staged in October 2007 under the brand, MMODANY-MadridFashionNewYork, or the exhibition of a selection of the best designs presented at CIBELES, which took place at the Trump Soho Showroom in June of last year.
EL EGO Presents a Series of Fashion Parades on the First Day
The fashion parades at CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK at Feria de Madrid will kick off on Friday 18th September in Hall 14.1 at 10.00 a.m., featuring the group of young designers who form part of EL EGO. On this occasion, the Fashion Show will present the ideas of ten of the most promising young Spanish designers at five double fashion parades. Out of the total number of participants, five will be taking part at the Fashion Show for the first time, in accordance with the rotation system set up at previous editions of EL EGO, which ensures that each edition offers an opportunity to new talents from the world of Spanish fashion. Thus, these new participants will feature alongside various participants from previous years.
On the same day, Friday 18th September, the EL EGO fashion parades will be followed by the inauguration of the fashion parades organised by established designers, a programme opened on this occasion by the Galician designer, Adolfo Domínguez, at 5.00 p.m. The day will be completed by the presentation of the L'Oreal Award for Best Designer at EL EGO, followed by the fashion parades organised by TCN, José Castro and Roberto Verino, respectively. On the same day, at 11.00 p.m., Davidelfín will present the same collection in Madrid that he will have already unveiled in New York.
Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September will feature the majority of the fashion parades organised by the designers that form part of the Association of Fashion Creators of Spain (ACME), which will continue up until Monday 21st at 6.00 p.m., which is when the collection by Elio Berhanyer will be presented. With the presentation of the collection by Antonio Miró at 7.30 p.m., Feria de Madrid will commence the staging of a series of fashion parades organised by other outstanding designers on the current Spanish fashion scene who do not belong to ACME. These fashion parades will continue up until Tuesday 22nd September.
Furthermore, two of the designers who form part of ACME, Jesús del Pozo and Carmen March, will present their respective collections at their studios in Madrid on Monday 21st September. In the case of Jesús del Pozo, this edition of CIBELES marks 35 years since he began his career within the world of fashion. In this respect, the designer has decided to return to his origins and carry out a presentation within his own creative universe, the place where he has conceived his collections over the last few years. The idea is to recollect those first fashion parades that the designer organised in the late 1970's and early 1980's in his small workshop, events that now form part of the history of Spanish fashion.
Another of the new features at this edition of CIBELES consists of the incorporation of Serguei Povaguin, winner of the L'Oreal Award for Best Designer at EL EGO at two consecutive editions, in the Fashion Show's General Programme. This designer will take part in a double fashion parade.
Furthermore, as is customary at editions of CIBELES featuring Spring/Summer collections, this edition will include a double swimwear fashion parade in order to showcase the collections of Guillermina Baeza and Dolores Cortés. Swimwear will also be the main theme of the creations presented by the designer, Montserrat Bassons, who will take part at the Fashion Show for the first time on this occasion.
Furthermore, CIBELES September 2009 will also include a series of Off-Programme events, featuring five presentations in Madrid organised by the designers, Davidelfín, Carmen March, María Escoté, Ion Fiz and María Lafuente.
L'Oreal Awards for Best Designer and Best Model
Once again at this edition, CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK will provide the setting for the presentation of a series of awards sponsored by the company, L'Oreal Paris, which will be granted to the best designers and the best collections presented at the Fashion Show, as well as to the model who has shone most brightly at the various fashion parades. Thus, this cosmetics and beauty care brand will present an award for the young designers taking part at EL EGO (endowed with a prize of 6,000 euros) and another award for the best collection presented by the designers taking part in the General Programme. The awards will be granted by a jury made up of various fashion and image experts. In addition, this jury will be entrusted with choosing the L'Oreal Paris- CIBELES MADRID FASHION
WEEK Best Model, who will receive a cash prize of 6,000 euros. At the last edition of CIBELES, the Award for Best Designer at EL EGO was granted to Serguei Povaguin for the second consecutive occasion, whilst the Best Collection Award went to Nicolás Vaudelet and the Best Model Award to Lourdes Coterón.
A Warm Welcome for the New Fashion Show Format
This edition of CIBELES will once again present the innovative fashion show format introduced in September 2008, an edition at which the organisers not only presented a new organisational and staging project, but also unveiled the brand, CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK. The main objective of this approach, which will guide the progress of CIBELES over the next few years, is to strengthen the presence of Spanish design within an international context that is becoming increasingly competitive.
In this respect, a more modern and up-to-date fashion show concept was designed, one that also integrated the staging of fashion parades organised by both established designers and the young talents that form part of the platform known as EL EGO. Other important new features included the following: the creation of two catwalk venues, known as Cibeles and Neptuno; an increase in the space occupied at the Fashion Show from 5,400 square metres to 14,000 square metres; and the creation of an area known as CIBELESPACIO, a setting for an ongoing series of events and activities, such as music, live concerts, the sale of clothing creations produced by young designers, etc.
In February 2009, CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK featured the participation of some 55 designers, who presented their collections at 45 fashion parades. The Fashion Show welcomed a total of 50,000 visitors, including buyers, members of the press and guests. Furthermore, the February edition was followed by 1,300 journalists, of whom one hundred represented foreign media bodies. Of this number, around thirty formed part of the International Press Programme that CIBELES organises for each edition of the event, in collaboration with the Spanish Foreign Trade Institute (ICEX). At the forthcoming edition, CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK will also feature a Guest Foreign Press Programme, organised in conjunction with ICEX.
CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK, an event organised by IFEMA, enjoys the financial backing of the Madrid Regional Government as well as that of a wide range of private sector sponsors. The event features the participation of brands that promote the ideas of fashion, design and creation, such as L'Oreal, Lancia, Grey Goose, Swatch, Cruzcampo, Nespresso, Côte d'Or, Paredes, Las Rozas Village, Ascer-Cerámica de España, Alpro Soja, Central Lechera Asturiana, Electrolux and Canon. In addition, Antena.nova, the official television channel at CIBELES MADRID FASHION WEEK, will offer full coverage of this edition with a special programme schedule, one that encompasses live broadcasts of the fashion parades and interviews with the main participants on each day of the Fashion Show. For their part, the leading fashion publications have already expressed their interest in taking part in the celebrations at this fiftieth edition of CIBELES based on their active presence in the area known as CIBELESPACIO. |
