“Extending the Runway: Tatiana Sorokko Style” opens in Moscow on April 2, 2010 and features a collection of over 80 garments and accessories from Sorokko’s extraordinary, largely couture wardrobe. The exhibition runs through May 1, 2010, at the brand new Russian Fashion Museum and has been curated by Dennita Sewell, former collections manager at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and presently curator of fashion design at the Phoenix Art Museum. The exhibition coincides with Russian Fashion Week which launches its 20th season on April 1, 2010 at the World Trade Center in Moscow.
Tatiana Sorokko was the first Soviet/Russian model to achieve world wide success. Moving from Moscow to Paris in 1990, she walked the runways for major designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada, Issey Miyake, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, and Calvin Klein, among many others. For over a decade, Sorokko graced the covers and editorial pages of European and American magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Elle and Cosmopolitan. Today she is a contributing editor of American Harper’s Bazaar interviewing and styling photo shoots of notable subjects all over the world. Her influence as an international style setter and taste maker extends well beyond the runway; Sorokko was named to the International Top 100 Best Dressed list by American Vogue in 2000 and the Best Dressed Women of All Time list by Harper’s Bazaar in 2007.
“Extending the Runway: Tatiana Sorokko Style” will showcase works from the early 20s through today, by legendary designers and fashion houses such as Fortuny, Paquin, Lanvin, Madame Grès, Balmain, Patou, Balenciaga, Ungaro, Hermès, Alaia, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gianfranco Ferré, Vivienne Westwood, Comme des Garçons, Yamamoto, Halston, Galanos, and Chado Ralph Rucci, among others.
A hard cover catalogue by the same name has been published to accompany the show. It is lavishly illustrated and features an introduction by Harper’s Bazaar editor Glenda Bailey and essays by exhibition curator Dennita Sewell, distinguished designer Ralph Rucci and internationally acclaimed fashion photographer Marco Glaviano.
Glenda Bailey, who is expected to attend the opening, says, “Tatiana is an icon for the way she looks in fashion, but also for the way she looks at fashion. It's what makes her more than what Lisa Fonssagrives called a great clothes hanger. It makes her a great fashion collaborator. That's why this exhibition … truly is an exclusive glimpse into the archive of fashion itself.”
Ralph Rucci, who will be attending the opening, attests, “Tatiana's style is not only flawless, it is also highly influential. She has absolutely inspired me…”
“Extending the Runway: Tatiana Sorokko Style” will occupy the newly renovated former offices of the Soviet Prime Minister Mikhail Solomentsev. This historical building is part of the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts. It is the first Western exhibition to take place here and a symbolic one, indeed, as Sorokko has left the Soviet Union, and now, twenty years later, she comes back to a new Russia to share her vision and exhibit her collection in the inner sanctum of the fallen empire.
Russian Fashion Museum (RFM) was established in Moscow in October 2009. It is part of the All-Russian Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts. The RFM’s basic collection has over 30,000 unique pieces including medieval costumes, important textiles and fashion sketches, among other rare and iconic objects. Still under construction, the permanent exhibition of the RFM will be open in 2011. This year, Russian Fashion Museum presents such outstanding exhibitions as “Extending the Runway: Tatiana Sorokko Style” and “Chintz of Russia”.
Russian Fashion Week in Moscow (RFW) is the biggest fashion event in Eastern Europe. On April 1-7, 2010 RFW is celebrating its 20th season (and 10th year) in Moscow’s Congress Hall of the World Trade Center, turning the Russian capital into one of the world’s hottest fashion destinations. RFW’s 2010/11 schedule includes over 50 shows by cutting-edge designers from not only Russia, but also United Kingdom, Italy and other European countries. RFW attracts over 45,000 people and over 1,000 accredited journalists and buyers seasonally. It is held with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Russia, the Russian Fashion Foundation and the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs. In past seasons Russian Fashion Week included shows of Vivienne Westwood, Julien Macdonald, La Perla, Catherine Malandrino, Jeremy Scott, Costume National, Francesco Smalto, JC de Castelbajac and other prominent international designers along with up-and-coming and established Russian brands. www.russianfashionweek.com
