Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2012: The new sustainable fashion

Stylish sustainable fashion takes over the runway when Nordic top designers participate in next weeks design challenge in Copenhagen next week. With top designer Peter Copping in the jury and supermodel, Erin O’Conner, announcing the winner, the design challenge shows how attractive sustainable fashion can be.

Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2012Copenhagen April 27 – Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2012 has invited selected top designers from the Nordic fashion industry to participate in a design challenge. The objective is clear: come up with innovative ways to make sustainable materials into sexy desirable fashion. 15 Nordic designers take part in the design challenge – well-known brands such as DAY Birger et Mikkelsen, Marimekko, IvanaHelsinki and BAUM UND PFERDGARTEN. The designers chose among new innovative sustainable materials such as crap fibre, seaweed and recycled bottles for their design. Each designer presents two complete outfits on the runway in a spectacular show on May 3rd at The Copenhagen Opera House.

One of the designers, Michael Kristensen - senior freelance designer and consultant at various international brands - was surprised that sustainable materials actually did not limit the creative process:

“I actually thought working with sustainable materials would be a limitation to the design process – so I was really surprised that it wasn’t the case. It’s a world of new opportunities to me.”

New ways to get inspired

Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2012A panel of prominent experts will be judging the outfits with the supermodel, Erin O’Conner, announcing the winner. In the panel you will find Peter Copping, Artistic Director at Nina Ricci, Catarina Midby and Johan Ward from H&M, Marko Matysik from Vogue and Kai Margrander, Fashion Director at GLAMOUR. Kai Margrander comments

“I’m looking very much forward to experience the designs made by the 15 Nordic designers, and to learn about the new innovative and sustainable materials, they have used. It is important that designers lead the way in showing great and desirable fashion made sustainably, in order for the consumer to become more aware of the many solutions that are actually at hand: to be able to choose fashion that is equally inspiring and sexy - and yet have a much smaller impact on people and our planet.”

The objective of the design challenge has an educational purpose of showcasing the possibilities rather than the limitations to the many new innovations sustainable materials can give and at the same time inspire to greater usage of sustainable materials in fashion.

Copenhagen Fashion Summit is the world's largest and most important conference on sustainability and CSR in the fashion industry. The biennial Summit gathers more than 1000 key industry stakeholders to identify new opportunities and forward-looking solutions for the global fashion industry to tackle the growing challenges facing the planet. Comparatively, the fashion industry is one of the most polluting and socially challenged industries.

One solution to a more sustainable fashion industry lies within the theme of the Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2012: Sustainable consumption. Consumers can play a pivotal role in transitioning the fashion industry towards more sustainable business models. The Copenhagen Fashion Summit 2012 is adressing how the industry can raise awareness and interest amongst consumers to choosing sustainable fashion and sustainable consumption of fashion.
